Giro: Performance on Two Wheels
Are you the type to do things that most people wouldn’t even consider? Do you prefer to carve your own path rather than follow the well-trodden trails? Riding at speeds that would send shivers down your insurer’s spine? Defying the laws of nature and gravity? As long as you keep pushing forward, Giro will too. When you stop, that’s when Giro stops. Giro has one obsession: your passion. That’s why Giro destroys more helmets in testing and development than some brands create. Founded over 30 years ago by Jim Gentes, a man obsessed with design and meeting unmet needs, this obsession led him to start making his own products, ultimately resulting in a company dedicated to serving passionate athletes with personal expression and advanced performance. Our world has changed dramatically over the last three decades, but Giro remains steadfastly committed to serving enthusiastic athletes. The Giro brand is and will always be a product brand.
Thus, the Giro brand can spend weeks discussing the difference of less than a millimetre in a shoe, a head shape, or the brim of a helmet. Giro is the brand that breathes details. It’s this attention to detail that sets the brand apart. Giro understands that for you, riding is more than just a hobby or a passing trend. That’s why your gear deserves attention to the smallest details. Giro wants to enable you to keep climbing. That’s why the brand does what it does. So, as long as you continue to strive to go faster and better, Giro will keep making the gear that allows you to do just that. The brand is renowned for its incredible equipment for biking. However, the brand is also present in another field: skiing. Let’s take a look at the areas covered by this amazing brand!
Giro: From Powder to Saddle, It’s Just a Step
To start, a bit of history about the Giro brand! In 1985, Jim Gentes established his brand focusing on design solutions that enhance experience and performance. The Giro logo he designed, meaning "tour or circuit", embodies the ultimate feeling on a bicycle. The first Giro helmet, the Avantage, was designed to help athletes outsmart howling winds in a new sport, the triathlon, where equipment was being reinvented by science. In 1986, Giro brought a prototype of a lightweight, high-performance helmet, the Prolight, to the Long Beach bike show and returned with orders for 100,000 units. In 1989, the Tour de France changed forever when a young American pioneer equipped with new aerodynamic gear (including his Aerohead™ helmet) won the race. In 1992, Giro created a modular water bottle with a wide screw opening. The "pop-top" water bottle has become a cycling icon for decades. Then, in 1994, Giro introduced the Roc Loc®, which greatly improved the stability of a helmet when riding over roots and rocks. Giro later created the first modular full-face helmet to meet the needs of freeriders. In 1999, Giro developed a lightweight snow helmet with vents. Skeptics laughed, but riders embraced it, and helmets gradually took their place on the mountains in winter.
Shortly after entering the eyewear category, Giro introduced the first consumer glasses that offered a lens exchange system. In 2008, Giro designed a range of gloves that incorporate unconventional, custom "multi-strand" construction to enhance fit and feel when gripping the bar. In 2010, the brand launched cycling shoes that stand out for their fit, comfort, and adaptability. Many riders note that turning the pedals feels better than ever.
The design of the bicycle changes with aerodynamic influence. Giro reinvents the Air Attack, a cannonball on the wide side of conventional thinking. Olympic gold follows. Why not design biking clothes for the freedom of outdoor adventure? With Giro, riders now have choices about how they dress.
In 2016, Giro introduced the ultimate helmet for World Cup alpine ski racers, featuring a blend of advanced materials and a new design that redirects energy called MIPS spherical. In 2018, the MIPS Aether was created, combining an airy, open design with MIPS Spherical technology to enhance head protection for cyclists. This is a testament to the brand’s commitment to leading head protection.
Today, one of the most popular Giro helmets is the Giro Synthe Mips, or the Giro Synthe for those who do not want MIPS protection. The Giro Syntax and Giro Syntax Mips are also great references at the moment, as is the Giro Montaro Mips. Finally, Giro Atmos 2, Giro Savix, Giro Savant Mips, Giro Rumble, and Giro Cylinder are among the top 10 Giro bike helmets not to be missed.
