To find the fleece that best suits your needs, it's important to know that there are three types, differing in their weight (density), which is the primary indicator of warmth level. A lightweight fleece will have a weight of 100 g/m² and is suitable for milder temperatures or intense activities like ski touring. Essential to have at the bottom of your bag, they are compact and breathable. The next range, the midweight fleeces, have a weight of 200 g/m². They are suitable for moderate activities in cold weather. The Ortovox Fleece Jacket falls into this category. Placed under a Gore-Tex jacket, it fully serves its purpose as a thermal layer, just like a men's down jacket. Finally, the thickest fleece jackets, known as heavyweight, have a weight of over 300 g/m², such as the Patagonia Retro Pile Jacket.
