Urban Cycling Helmets
Why choose an urban cycling helmet?
An urban cycling helmet stands out distinctly from its mountain biking or road cycling counterparts. Designed for the city, it incorporates features tailored to your daily commutes. Ventilation is generous without being excessive, as you won't reach the speeds of a professional peloton, but you want to avoid arriving at the office with a hairstyle ruined by sweat. The design remains understated and elegant, compatible with both your professional attire and your casual weekend look.
The removable visor is a major asset: it protects your eyes from the low rays of the morning sun, light rain, and even daring insects. Removable, it adapts to your desires and weather conditions. Some models also incorporate rear LED lighting systems, perfect for enhancing your visibility during winter journeys or at the end of the day.
How to measure your head for a city cycling helmet?
A poorly fitted helmet does not provide adequate protection, no matter how high-performing it is. Measuring your head circumference takes just a minute and makes all the difference. Grab a soft measuring tape and position it about two centimeters above your eyebrows, going all the way around your head at the most prominent part at the back. Note the measurement obtained.
Manufacturers generally offer several sizes, with adjustment systems allowing for a refined fit. The tightening dial at the back and the side straps should provide a firm hold without uncomfortable pressure points. The helmet should neither move when you shake your head nor painfully compress your forehead.
Safety standards for city cycling helmets
All city cycling helmets in our selection meet the European EN 1078 standards, ensuring a proven level of protection. But innovations go further now. MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) technology reduces rotational forces transmitted to the brain during oblique impacts, which are the most common in urban falls.
The in-mold construction, where the outer shell and inner foam are fused, improves strength while lightening the weight. The result: robust helmets that you forget you're wearing, even during prolonged rides. Some models even incorporate programmed deformation zones, optimizing shock absorption depending on the angle of impact.
Comfort and ventilation of the urban cycling helmet
Cycling in the city involves frequent stops at red lights, repeated starts, and constant rhythm changes. An intelligent ventilation system prevents overheating without creating an unpleasant draft. Strategically positioned openings channel fresh air and expel heat, maintaining your comfort even during climbs up Montmartre or the steep streets of Lyon.
The inner padding, often removable and washable, absorbs sweat and gradually adapts to the shape of your head. Ensure that the foams do not create pressure points on your temples or forehead after wearing it for about ten minutes.
Essential accessories for cycling in the city
Your urban cycling helmet fits into a coherent set of equipment designed for the city. A cycling backpack specifically designed, with its optimized carrying system and compatibility with helmet wear, transports your laptop and documents without compromising your comfort. The slim straps and chest straps position themselves without interfering with the helmet straps.
When the rain threatens, a waterproof cycling trouser keeps your legs dry without hindering your pedalling. The breathable waterproofing avoids the sauna effect, even during intense efforts. Complete your gear with a high-performance cycling lighting system: a powerful front light and a flashing rear light maximize your visibility to other road users.
Maintenance and lifespan of a city cycling helmet
A well-maintained city cycling helmet retains its protective properties for several years. Regularly clean the outer shell with a damp sponge and mild soap. The inner foams, when removable, can be machine washed at 30°C in a laundry bag. Let them air dry, never on a radiator which could deform the materials.
Replace your helmet after any fall involving an impact, even without visible damage. The internal structures may have sustained micro-fractures compromising future protection. Similarly, a helmet older than five years deserves replacement, as materials naturally degrade over time and with UV exposure.
Choosing the right city cycling helmet transforms your perception of urban cycling. Reassuring protection, assured comfort, and practical features combine to make every journey an enjoyable moment. Because cycling in the city should always rhyme with serenity.
