Walking & Hiking Jackets
Walking & Hiking Jackets, the essential gear for trekking anywhere and in any weather
How delightful it is to wander along the sunlit slopes of the Swiss mountains and lose oneself in their rocky vastness. You will find a peace so perfect and absolute that it becomes deafening, and the glaciers will become your adventure companions. However, a crossing of the Oberland route is not to be taken lightly, and it is wise to have the right equipment prepared before your departure for this unmissable trek! Among the items in a hiker's wardrobe, the Walking & Hiking Jackets are probably the most important hiking clothing. Indeed, whether you are heading out for an alpine hike, a walk in the woods, or a stroll along the coast, you are not immune to the elements. Therefore, you must not forget your Walking & Hiking Jacket. But which one to choose? Depending on the type of walk, the location, the season, and the weather conditions, you will need a waterproof and breathable jacket that protects against rain, snow, wind, etc., without compromising breathability and lightness. Thus, neither wind nor rain will defeat you if you have a Walking & Hiking Jacket in your possession!
Choosing your Walking & Hiking Jacket wisely, between waterproofing and breathability
A waterproof hiking jacket features a membrane, a fabric that, in addition to preventing water from entering, allows internal moisture to escape. Yes, you are not dreaming; it is possible to sweat even in the rain, but thanks to a breathable trekking jacket, this minor detail will be a distant memory. Your trekking jacket will be considered a third layer and serves as a true fortress against the surrounding storm. Thus, even in Gosaikund and under pouring rain, you will enjoy total protection and will not miss a thing from your Himalayan expedition. Two criteria come into play when choosing your trekking jacket: waterproofing and breathability. A fabric can have various degrees of waterproofing, measured in Schmerber. If you only need to remember one piece of information about your future trekking jacket, it is this! The fabric is placed under a column of water, and then the height of water needed for the droplets to penetrate the fabric is measured. A height of 10,000 Schmerber will provide you with a high-quality waterproof jacket, while a jacket rated at 20,000 Schmerber will be perfectly waterproof and should be preferred for a high mountain trek, where ice and snow are abundant. Regarding the breathability of a trekking jacket, it can be measured by two units. The MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate) indicates the amount of water that evaporates from a fabric in 24 hours. A high water vapour transfer rate means your fabric will be breathable. Between 10,000 and 30,000, your Walking & Hiking Jacket will be very breathable. You can also rely on the RET (Resistance Evaporative Transfer), which indicates a fabric's resistance to moisture evacuation. A low index signifies a breathable trekking jacket. A RET of 12 offers good breathability, and with an index below 6, your trekking jacket will be considered ultra-breathable. Whatever mountain jacket you choose, know that if conditions allow, it can be worn directly over a technical base layer. However, note that a breathable waterproof jacket is not a warm jacket, a property reserved for the second layer (fleece or down), which provides true thermal protection. Finally, elements such as freedom of movement, chest or hand pockets, can also make a difference between two Walking & Hiking Jackets.
