The Devold brand was born in 1853, in the west of Norway. Following a trip to Germany, Ole Andreas Devold brought back mechanical knitting equipment to create wool underwear and gloves. At that time, the Norwegian brand primarily aimed to design rødlua, the famous Norwegian hats, symbols of adventure and exploration.

In the early 19th century, the company decided to create its own hydroelectric dam to facilitate electricity production, wash, and dye its wool.
