The story of Petzl began in the 1960s with Fernand Petzl, a passionate caving enthusiast and ingenious craftsman. Driven by a constant desire to improve the equipment he used, he imagined increasingly innovative tools in his workshop to explore the depths. In 1968, he marketed his first equipment, including Petzl carabiners and officially founded the company shortly thereafter. Based in Crolles, near Grenoble and the mountains, the brand specializes in mountaineering gear, safety equipment, and headlamps.
