Mummy Sleeping Bags
The mummy sleeping bag: the guarantee of a warm night's sleep while camping
Are you into wild camping or camping at medium or high altitudes, with or without a camping tent and do you tend to feel a bit chilly? If you love the feeling of being in a warm cocoon, then the mummy sleeping bag will be your best night companion under the stars! The mummy sleeping bag, also known as a mummy bag, unlike the blanket sleeping bag or rectangular sleeping bag, hugs the contours of your body to provide you with optimal thermal insulation throughout the night. Whether it has a hood or not, the mummy sleeping bag, as its name suggests, has a shape identical to a mummy or a sarcophagus, meaning it follows the exact shapes of the human body. Wider at the shoulders and then tapering down towards the hips and feet, the mummy sleeping bag limits air entry into the bag, keeping you warm during your outdoor adventures.
The mummy sleeping bag: advantages and disadvantages
The mummy sleeping bag has a major advantage over other types of sleeping bags: significant space savings in your hiking backpack. Besides the space-saving aspect, thermal insulation is much better as there is no loss of space around the waist and legs. The mummy sleeping bag involves body confinement, so don’t worry about feeling cramped! If the ground is frozen or damp, also consider bringing an inflatable camping mat, ideal for isolating yourself even better from the cold.
The natural down mummy sleeping bag
When you embark on a trek or a ski touring trip at medium or high altitudes, such as the Annapurna Circuit trek or the Chamonix-Zermatt High Route ski tour, having faced the elements like wind, rain, cold, hail, or humidity, come evening, you’ll be glad to take a nice hot shower and slip into your mummy sleeping bag, snug as a bug. For those who feel the cold more, the natural down mummy sleeping bag is a wise choice. Indeed, a mummy sleeping bag made of duck or goose down guarantees optimal warmth and increased comfort compared to s synthetic sleeping bags. Compressible and impressively lightweight, the mummy sleeping bag made of natural down is ideal for hiking in dry and cold terrain. However, beware of humidity! The natural down mummy sleeping bag is sensitive to moisture as the feathers can clump together, degrading the quality of the down and its lofting power. On Hardloop.fr, you will find several models of mummy sleeping bags made of natural down, catering to all comfort temperature needs. If you practice mountaineering or often hike in winter, don’t hesitate to check out our range of extreme cold sleeping bags.
The synthetic mummy sleeping bag
The mummy sleeping bag made of synthetic fibres is of equal quality to a natural down mummy sleeping bag. However, the synthetic mummy sleeping bag is less compressible, heavier, and less comfortable than a natural down camping bag. It is advisable to opt for a synthetic mummy sleeping bag if your outdoor expeditions take place in areas with mild temperatures. The maintenance of a synthetic mummy sleeping bag is, however, simpler than that of a natural down bag as it washes more easily in a washing machine and dries faster.
