Hiking Shoes & Boots
The hiking shoe for athletes who love challenges
A hiking shoe that fits well allows every hiker to avoid excessive discomfort after a long hike. It's normal to feel heavy legs, but intense foot pain is not. By treating your feet royally with a quality pair of hiking shoes & boots, your feet can cover the miles without issue. Beyond comfort, hiking shoes tailored to your personal practice will help you avoid many injuries. The purpose of a hiking shoe is indeed to support your ankle so that it does not twist during exertion. To find the hiking shoe that your prince will bring you at midnight (certainly because you left him in the wild, too happy to find your hiking tent to recover from your day), a few criteria need to be defined. It is not acceptable for you to find yourself without proper footwear.
Choosing the right hiking shoes
For you, choosing the right hiking shoes & boots is as important as choosing your hardshell jacket or determining your route before departure, but you’re unsure how to proceed. Several elements need to be inspected and determined based on where your trekking will take place, its duration, and the season you are departing in.
The upper part, which covers the top of your foot in your men's hiking shoes or women's hiking shoes, is made from leather, nubuck, or various synthetic materials. When the upper is high and wraps around the ankle, the athlete has a hiking shoe with a high shaft. These hiking shoes are indeed the heaviest on the market, but they allow for physical performance and are built to last. They are thus used during long walks and will complement your hiking backpack that can support heavy loads, such as the Spindrift Guide 42 L, a backpack from Salomon designed for long treks. Conversely, when the upper comes below the ankle bone, we refer to it as a 'low' upper. A hiking shoe with a low upper is generally intended for casual walks as it is very light, flexible, and perfectly suited for strolls with little elevation gain. Finally, when it reaches the level of the ankle bone, the upper is referred to as 'mid'. If you have women's or men's hiking shoes with a mid upper, your ankle, relatively well supported, can handle relatively long and steep hikes. This type of upper ensures all trekkers and hikers optimal grip, in addition to relative lightness.
If you venture into areas where the climate is humid and rain may accompany your adventure, opting for a gore tex shoe to improve the waterproofing of your hiking shoes & boots could be a solution to your problem. For example, if you are planning to do the Annapurna Circuit as the winter season approaches, choosing a waterproof shoe is a wise choice.
After the upper, let’s talk about the sole! Jokes aside, as a trekker with common sense, the sole is the second element of your hiking shoes & boots that you should observe. This rubber sole is combined with various components that make it more or less rigid. A good hiking sole, for a quality hiking shoe, should have good traction to provide you with optimal grip and good cushioning to prevent your joints from suffering.
Finally, the lacing should be monitored to find a hiking shoe that will take you to the ends of the earth. We recommend choosing quick and stable lacing that will provide optimal support for your foot, thus reducing the risk of injury.
