The idea for Nemo Equipment was born one restless night on the slopes of Mount Washington as Cam Brensinger spent five sleepless hours in a poorly designed bivouac. Descending the mountain the next day, he decided to take on the challenge of creating camping gear that added comfort to the equation of a successful adventure. Three days after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, he founded Nemo Equipment, now known for tents, sleeping pads, and the design of an ultra-light inflatable mattress. The name Nemo Equipment (New England Mountain Equipment) pays homage to the brand's roots in New England and is a nod to Jules Verne's Captain Nemo. Cam settled in a restored textile factory in New Hampshire with a few fellow designers and engineers. He worked for months designing and building prototypes of his first tents and revolutionary camping gear. Two years later, he launched the brand, which quickly began winning awards for its design and innovation within the adventurer community. A significant milestone in the history of Nemo Equipment occurred in 2005 when the brand was named the grand winner of the ISPO BrandNew Award, an accolade that recognises the most innovative products in the outdoor industry worldwide. This important honour brought global recognition to Nemo Equipment and marked the beginning of a long series of awards, honours, and media attention that continues to this day. Sales began in May on the Nemo Equipment website for very limited quantities. Nemo Equipment tents started travelling worldwide as part of expeditions, adventure races, hiking trips, and cycling journeys. The office space tripled to allow for storage, rain chamber testing, and photography of various products and camping gear. To this day, Nemo Equipment ranks among the top 10 workplaces in New Hampshire and is the author of numerous innovative policies within the company, such as the Go Far program, which allows employees to travel to test the gear.
