The N°12 Carbon by Opinel is the perfect example of the durability one can expect from a knife, equipped with a special blade that makes it even better. Its carbon steel blade offers exceptional sharpness, making it a true all-purpose knife. Thanks to its size and solid construction, it is suitable for cutting, cooking, hunting, or any demanding tasks. We appreciate its beech handle sourced from French farms, easy to maintain and protected by a varnish. Its Virobloc locking mechanism allows the knife to be safely folded for travel or securely locked in the open position during use. Robust and functional, the N°12 Carbon by Opinel makes no compromises.
Carbon Steel: Opinel carbon steel is a non-alloy steel with a high carbon content, allowing for excellent hardness after heat treatment, which ensures a perfect edge retention, great wear resistance, and easy sharpening. However, carbon steel has low corrosion resistance to moisture, so it requires care: do not leave your knife in humid environments, especially not in the dishwasher. Wipe the blade with an oily cloth after use and frequently oil both the blade and its joint.
Handle: Beech is the most commonly used wood for Opinel handles. Sourced from French farms, it is hard, durable, and easy to work with. It has a homogeneous appearance with a light color ranging from yellow to pink. It is recognizable by the presence of numerous small dark streaks. The handle is varnished to be better protected against moisture and dirt.
Safety Ring: Invented in 1955 by Marcel Opinel, the Virobloc safety ring equips all folding knives from N°06 onwards. Made from stainless steel, the Virobloc consists of two parts: a fixed part and a sliding part. In addition to locking the blade in the open position (safety during use), it is now possible to lock the blade in the closed position (safety during transport).
